Is REAL ID the problem?

Here is an interesting perspective on South Dakota’s challenges with implementing Real ID law for their Driver’s License Issuance system. From reporter David Montgomery’s blog for the Argus Leader.

“Most of the blame for the long lines seen at Sioux Falls’ driver licensing stations was placed on the confluence of staff shortages and the summer rush.

But floating in the background are the rules, now three years old in South Dakota, requiring hefty new documentation to get or renew a driver’s license.

Adopted in South Dakota to comply with the federal REAL ID Act, passed in the name of homeland security to make state ID documents more secure.”
